Pali Puka Lookout
Oil on Aluminum
24"x48"
Original Available
This ridge hike is very easy to access from the Pali Highway, near Kailua. It's a very short walk from a designated parking area. Some parts are very narrow on the edge of a cliff. The drops are a thousand feet tall, maybe more. It might be too edgy for someone with fear of heights. This view is from right before you get to the puka. I walked over it like a natural bridge without realizing it. Walking on this path made me feel very small. It is very humbling to think that my presence on this landscape is like a grain of sand on a beach. This Scenery may be the inspiration for the expression "Kingdom of Hawaii". Over eight hundred warriors are believed to have lost their lives in this very cliff, in 1795. This event is known as the battle of Nu'uanu. A historical event that was the turning point towards the unification of all the Hawaiian Islands under king Kamehameha I.
